The Portuguese-flagged bulk carrier Barbara G was refloated in the Detroit River after running aground while carrying 21,000 tons of wheat to Italy. The 623-foot freighter was assisted by three tugboats and was successfully freed without causing any pollution, damage, or injuries.

The Great Lakes Towing Company played a critical role in the operation, providing the necessary tugboats to assist in freeing the stranded vessel. They worked closely with various stakeholders including the ship’s agents, the Coast Guard, the salvors, and the insurance company representing the ship owners. Following Coast Guard approval, the tugs initiated the operation and successfully freed the grounded vessel in less than two hours.

Lindsay Dew, Director of Operations & Compliance at The Great Lakes Towing Company, emphasized the team’s rapid response and seamless coordination with the various agencies involved, underscoring their commitment to ensuring the safety and efficiency of maritime operations. The cause of the grounding is still being investigated.
