A Chinese bulk carrier, Xin Hai Tong 23, ran aground in the Suez Canal early on Thursday morning, causing other ships in the convoy to pause. The Suez Canal Authority sent two tugs to assist in refloating the vessel, which was successfully completed by 0740 GMT. Groundings are a regular occurrence in the canal, with the soft sand of the banks often forgiving. The Xin Hai Tong 23 is a Hong Kong-flagged bulk carrier with a mixed port state control history. In recent memory, the largest grounding accident on the canal was the Ever Given in 2021.
