Belgian shipping and cleantech company CMB.TECH has partnered with Dutch power solutions provider DBR to develop the first dual-fuel hydrogen gensets for marine applications. The collaboration aims to accelerate the decarbonization of the maritime industry. DBR will be responsible for constructing and delivering the gensets, while CMB.TECH will provide the hydrogen technology. The gensets, which use the MAN V12-24l engine, have a maximum output of 940 kVA and can operate on diesel or in dual fuel mode, achieving emission savings of up to 83%. Damen Shipyards has already ordered the first three gensets for use on Windcat’s CSOVs.

CMB.TECH and DBR plan to continue developing and expanding the use of these dual-fuel gensets in the maritime industry. The companies believe that decarbonizing onboard power generation is a crucial step towards achieving zero-emission shipping. The gensets offer a flexible and future-proof solution for reducing emissions in the industry. The collaboration aims to provide a cost-efficient and robust platform for the CSOV fleet of Windcat.

Arwout Verwoerd, Sales Marine at DBR, expressed excitement about the transition to alternative fuels and the opportunity to offer a solution that significantly reduces emissions for maritime customers. The gensets can still operate on diesel when hydrogen is unavailable, ensuring the vessels can be used at all times. CMB.TECH’s CTO, Roy Campe, emphasized the importance of decarbonization and the potential impact of hybrid technologies in the maritime industry.
