The Indian Coast Guard successfully evacuated a Filipino mariner, Valid Ola Gilbert, who had suffered a cardiac attack aboard the vessel MV Evelyn Maersk. The vessel was 110 nautical miles from Kochi when the incident occurred. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Mumbai received the information and coordinated with the Indian Coast Guard to provide medical assistance. The Coast Guard ship ICGS C-427 set sail from Vizhinjam and launched an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) to carry out the mid-sea medical evacuation. However, the patient could not be shifted to a suitable spot onboard the helicopter, so the Coast Guard vessel approached MV Evelyn Maersk, evacuated the patient, and headed to Vizhinjam harbour. The patient was stabilized enroute with portable oxygen support and medical aid, and upon arrival, he was taken to NIMS Hospital for further medical management.
