Authorities in Australia are searching for the source of a large amount of cocaine that has washed up on the shores of New South Wales (NSW) over the past week. The NSW Police Force announced that over the course of seven days, multiple packages of cocaine were found on the province’s northern beaches. The packages contained a total of approximately 85 kilograms of cocaine.
The State Crime Command has launched an investigation into the origin of the drugs, with assistance from PolAir, Marine Area Command, Australian Border Force, and Surf Life Saving NSW. One theory is that the packages may have been attached to the hull of a cargo ship and torn loose by a storm, with weather patterns from Cyclone Jasper washing them ashore. The seized packages will undergo further forensic examination.
The discovery of the washed-up drugs comes as NSW is experiencing a significant increase in narcotics seizures. Just last week, NSW Police charged five men over an alleged kidnapping attempt that led to the discovery of 722 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of over US$680 million. Authorities are working to find and hold accountable those responsible for the drugs washing ashore.
