A Maersk containership lost at least 40 containers overboard in the North Sea, causing widespread reports of debris washing up on beaches along the northern part of Denmark’s shoreline. The incident occurred after the vessel encountered rough conditions from the storm called Pia. The shipping line is confirming the incident and will be investigating the extent of the damage, while the authorities in Denmark are warning ships of the likely presence of containers and debris floating in the North Sea.

Media reports in Denmark indicate that at least four containers have washed ashore, with possibly 42 still in the North Sea. The material, including refrigerators, medical items, shoes, and other consumer goods, appears to be scattered across nearly 10 miles of beaches. Maersk confirmed that the lost containers are believed to have been from the Mayview Maersk, one of its largest vessels, and that they have hired a company to locate the lost boxes.

The vessel, which is 1,309 feet in length, is due to reach Gdansk, Poland on December 24, where a full inspection will be conducted to assess the damage. Maersk stated that no crew members were injured during the incident and that the vessel is currently operating as normal.
