A recent report by MedSea, a Singapore-based company that provides telemedical assistance to seafarers, has revealed the most common illnesses and injuries experienced by sailors. The study, which covered a two-year period from 2021 to 2022, found that Covid-19 was the most prevalent affliction during that time, accounting for one in five cases. Many ships experienced outbreaks of the virus, leading to multiple infected crew members. Other common medical issues included musculoskeletal, dermatological, and gastrointestinal problems.
Injuries were also a significant concern, with hand injuries being the most frequently reported, comprising nearly one-third of injury cases. These injuries often led to ships needing to divert to bring patients to medical facilities on shore. Despite a growing awareness of mental health in the transportation industry, only one in five seafarers suffering from mental health concerns opted to receive emotional support counseling. However, MedSea noted a sharp increase in dental cases in 2023, likely due to pent-up demand following the easing of pandemic restrictions.
The report highlights the tough and dangerous nature of a sailor’s job, with long hours and hard physical work in remote locations leading to a high risk of illness and injury. It also underscores the importance of providing adequate medical support and resources to seafarers to ensure their health and well-being while at sea.
