The European Union (EU) has introduced a maritime technical assistance package for the Philippines, aimed at enhancing maritime safety and labor standards for Filipino seafarers. This initiative will also help strengthen the capabilities of the country’s maritime regulatory agencies, according to Transportation Secretary Jaime J. Bautista. The assistance is part of the EU-ASEAN Sustainability Connectivity Package (SCOPE), which focuses on improving seafarer training, education, and working conditions in the Philippines. The project is set to run until November 2027.
Secretary Bautista highlighted that the EU’s support will boost confidence in the Philippines’ maritime sector, allowing for improved connectivity and technical cooperation with the EU and other ASEAN nations. He expressed the hope of adopting European standards for training and certification systems, while also learning from best practices among ASEAN neighbors. This collaboration is expected to bring about positive changes in the maritime industry in the Philippines.
By aligning with European standards and benchmarking practices from neighboring ASEAN countries, the Philippines aims to elevate its maritime sector to international levels. The EU’s assistance package will play a crucial role in achieving this goal, ensuring that Filipino seafarers receive the necessary training and support to excel in their roles. This partnership signifies a step towards greater collaboration and cooperation in the maritime domain.
