Damen Shipyards Group has revealed the ASD Tug 2111, the latest vessel in its Compact Tugs product range. The tug has a bollard pull of 50 tons and is 21.5 meters in length. It has a high freeboard, a generous tumblehome and a full-view bridge offering 360-degree views of the surrounding waters. The tug’s spacious, uncluttered decks are designed to make it even safer, and its winch, positioned in the deckhouse, provides forward and reverse towing operations with a single winch.

Damen Shipyards has incorporated a new power generation system into its Compact Tugs lineup. This system is able to generate electricity using the abundant power available from the main engines, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The tug also features a propeller with a diameter of 2.4 meters, which provides increased thrust, and a patented Damen Twin Fin for excellent course keeping and predictable sailing behavior in both free sailing and bow-to-bow operations.

The ASD Tug 2111 is equipped with IMO Tier II compliant engines and can achieve IMO Tier III certification thanks to the option of installing Damen’s Emission Reduction System. The system is a specially developed exhaust aftertreatment system that reduces the nitrogen oxides (NOX) from the tug’s emissions before they are released into the atmosphere. It can be built into the existing exhaust silencers and can be retrofitted into the tug later in its lifespan.

Damen Shipyards is already building six ASD tugs 2111 at Damen Shipyards Changde, with the aim of offering quick access to the latest tug technology in terms of safety, sustainability, reliability and efficiency. The company said it is also working on all-electric versions of its compact ASD tugs to follow in the footsteps of the successful RSD-E Tug 2513, Damen’s first all-electric, zero-emissions tug. Damen reiterated that its goal is to be the most sustainable and connected shipbuilder in the world and the ASD Tug 2111 reflects that aim.

In an age where ocean-going vessels are growing in size, the ASD Tug 2111 meets new challenges faced in ports. Harbour tugs must be designed to work in less space and have more power to perform, hence the development of the latest tug technology. The ASD Tug 2111 has a closed keel cooling system that reduces the number of seawater systems onboard, lowering the amount of erosion-related maintenance. The tug’s features make it an attractive addition to Damen Shipyards portfolio.
