Danish Shipping has recently released a series of new recommendations aimed at putting an end to bullying and harassment on Danish-flagged ships. These recommendations were unveiled at the annual Blue Pride Bar event and presented to Minister Morten Bødskov. In response to Bødskov’s initiatives in January 2024 to prevent bullying and harassment on Danish ships, Danish Shipping collaborated with member shipping companies to create best practice recommendations. These recommendations include establishing effective whistleblower schemes and complaint procedures to ensure a safe and secure experience for all seafarers.

The main recommendations include leading from the top, focusing on challenges and implementing training, and regularly measuring and reporting progress. Lars Have Hansen, Chairman of the Danish Engineer’s Association, emphasized the importance of these guidelines in addressing the existing problem of harassment on ships and improving conditions for employees. Anne H. Steffensen, CEO of Danish Shipping, stressed the collective responsibility to prioritize psychological safety alongside physical safety in the maritime industry.

At the Blue Pride Bar event, Hafnia was announced as the winner of Danish Shipping’s DEI-award for their efforts in promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion within the shipping industry. Hafnia has implemented various initiatives to support both seafarers and land-based employees, including improved parental leave policies, gender-neutral language, and zero tolerance for bullying and harassment. With 8% of their seafarers being women, Hafnia’s commitment to inclusivity sets a positive example for the industry.
