Philippines Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista emphasized the importance of aligning maritime projects with government agencies and non-government organizations to protect the marine environment and resources of the country. He highlighted the need for organizations such as the Philippine Coast Guard, Maritime Industry Authority, and Philippine Ports Authority to take inspiration from Oceana, a nonprofit ocean conservation organization, in calibrating projects that impact the marine environment. Bautista made these remarks during the launch of the Mangroves Photo Exhibit at the National Museum of Natural History, stressing the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in preserving marine ecosystems for future generations.

Bautista also mentioned the Department of Transportation’s projects supporting the blue economy under the Maritime Industry Development Plan (MIDP) 2028. This comprehensive plan includes initiatives focused on transport safety and security, environmental sustainability, digitalization, maritime workforce development, and administrative governance systems. Embracing the blue economy not only helps combat climate change but also ensures the preservation of biodiversity, unlocking the full potential of marine resources while safeguarding marine ecosystems.

In a related effort to support environmental protection, the Cebu Port Authority (CPA) conducted a tree-planting activity in Cotcot, Liloan, Cebu, where 5,000 mangrove propagules were planted by officials and employees alongside the Purok Bakhaw Women’s Organization. Led by General Manager Kit Comendador, the initiative underscores CPA’s commitment to environmental conservation, as mangroves play a crucial role in coastal ecosystems by serving as nurseries for marine life and natural barriers against erosion and storm tides. This initiative aims to boost biodiversity and enhance coastal resilience against natural disasters, aligning with the broader goal of protecting the marine environment.
