DP World’s International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) in Cochin recently achieved a significant milestone by successfully handling the largest-ever container vessel, MSC MARA, which measures 364 meters in length, 51 meters in width, and has a capacity of 15,934 TEUs. This accomplishment at ICTT Cochin, India’s first transshipment terminal, was made possible by the exceptional support from the Cochin Port Authority, marking the highest throughput ever achieved on the MSC MARA.
In addition to this achievement, ICTT Cochin has surpassed the milestone of handling over 7 million TEUs since its inception and recently installed two state-of-the-art Ship-to-Shore Mega Max cranes in December 2023. These upgrades, combined with new e-RTGs and expanded yard capacity, enable faster vessel turnaround times and sustainable cargo movement, allowing the terminal to accommodate Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs) and improve overall productivity.
The berthing of MSC MARA at DP World’s Cochin terminal highlights its essential role as a gateway and transshipment terminal for cargo movement to and from markets in South India, benefiting from its strategic geographic proximity to major maritime sea routes. The terminal’s growth underscores its importance in facilitating trade flows, connecting close to 50% of EXIM cargo directly to key markets such as the Middle East, Far East, Europe, and the Mediterranean, while also enhancing regional connectivity and trade efficiency within India.
