The River Navigation Department (RND) is nearing completion of its two new RoRo ferries, focusing on improving passenger safety. The final touches, including additional safety railings, are being added to one of the ferries at the Loutolim shipyard. Once painting is complete, alignment, engine work, and propeller shaft fitting will commence, followed by trials starting May 15, per RND sources. These ferries, commissioned by the RND on a build-and-operate basis, were expected to be ready by May 1 but may face further delays.
The shipbuilding process faced challenges, such as a delay in receiving propulsion systems from Austria, which arrived late in Goa due to issues at the Mumbai port. This new deck-mounted propulsion technology aims to enhance the efficiency of ferry operations in Goa. Another setback occurred recently when operational issues arose during construction, leading the shipyard to lower the incomplete second vessel into the water first. Subsequently, the first vessel was lowered, allowing the second ferry to be raised back out of the water to complete finishing touches.
Despite delays and obstacles, the RND is determined to launch the RoRo ferries next month, marking a significant milestone in Goa’s river navigation system. This introduction of new technology and enhanced safety measures demonstrates the department’s commitment to providing a safer and more efficient ferry service for passengers. The completion of these ferries represents a step forward in modernizing and improving transportation options in the region.
