French President Emmanuel Macron recently visited Canopée, the world’s first wind-powered hybrid industrial cargo ship, showcasing France’s dedication to decarbonizing the shipping industry. During his visit to the Guiana Space Center in Kourou on March 26, 2024, Macron expressed confidence in the Ariane 6 rocket, Europe’s next rocket set to launch from French Guiana.

Macron toured Canopée, a double-propelled open-top roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ship designed to transport components of the Ariane 6 rocket from France to French Guiana. The innovative vessel, equipped with wind-assisted propulsion, reduces fuel consumption by 30%. French designer and manufacturer AYRO provided the ship with automated, lowerable wings to enhance its efficiency.

Alizés, a low-carbon shipping company responsible for transporting the Ariane 6 launcher, expressed gratitude for Macron’s visit, highlighting the innovative approach taken by the maritime industry. The vessel, built by a joint venture between Zéphyr & Borée and JIFMAR Offshore Services, represents a significant step in the decarbonization of industrial shipping. Canopée was awarded the Ship of the Year Award for 2023 in recognition of its advancements in sustainability.
