An engineer was killed in an engine room explosion aboard the Turkish-managed product tanker, MT Torc, while it was sailing in the Mediterranean. The shipping company, Besiktas Shipping, based in Istanbul, has promised an investigation into the cause of the explosion. The vessel, registered in Malta, was en route to Italy at the time of the incident.
The second engineer, Mehmet Alta?, was severely injured in the explosion and passed away before medical help could reach the vessel. The Italian Port Authorities and Coast Guard, Ankara MRCC, and Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Foreign Affairs were contacted, and the ship was working with the authorities to arrange for an immediate medical evacuation of the injured crewmember. However, the evacuation was canceled when it was reported that the engineer had succumbed to his injuries.
The product tanker, built in 2010 and acquired in 2020, was undergoing an investigation by an international expert organization for the incident analysis. Besiktas Shipping, with over 60 years of experience managing vessels, has a fleet of 34 ships, mostly product tankers, as well as other types of vessels. They work with major charterers in various shipping segments, including crude oil, product, chemical, gas, container, and dry bulk shipping.
