Stena Bulk, the owner of the Stena Immaculate oil tanker, is collaborating with Crowley, the vessel’s manager, and U.K. agencies following a recent incident where the tanker collided with the container ship Solong. Salvage experts from SMIT Salvage are currently conducting detailed assessments of the Stena Immaculate to determine the extent of the damage. The assessment so far has revealed that only one cargo tank containing Jet A-1 fuel and one ballast tank containing sea water were affected by the collision.
Despite the impact and resulting fire, the salvage team has confirmed that 17,515 barrels of Jet A-1 fuel were lost, while the remaining cargo and bunkers are secure. The crew of the Stena Immaculate demonstrated professionalism by activating fire monitors before abandoning ship, which helped limit the damage to only the directly impacted cargo tanks. The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency has stated that there is no immediate pollution concern from the tanker.
The salvage process is ongoing, and a comprehensive plan for salvaging and towing the tanker will be developed in coordination with the relevant authorities. Stena Bulk’s President and CEO, Erik Hånell, commended the crew for their quick and decisive actions in response to the collision. The company is committed to working closely with all parties involved to ensure a thorough and successful salvage operation.
