The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) has formed a high-level task force to oversee the establishment of the Indian Maritime Centre (IMC) with the goal of enhancing global credibility for the Indian maritime sector. The task force, chaired by an additional secretary of MoPSW, will provide policy direction for the formation of IMC and include representation from the domestic maritime ecosystem. The Indian Ports Association (IPA) will provide funding and secretariat support for the establishment of IMC, which will be a world-class facility with an equipped conference area and meeting rooms.

The task force’s terms of reference will include deliberating upon the functioning, scope, and best structure of IMC, deciding the by-laws and internal procedures, and determining the role of expert committees. The establishment of IMC is seen as a crucial step for India, given the complexity of its maritime industry, and the need for a unified approach to maritime policy across different sub-sectors. This move is also aimed at aligning India with countries like South Korea and Japan, which have a unified approach to maritime policy.

The IMC Secretariat will be a key component of the establishment, and the task force will work on forming advisory groups on important topics involving member representatives and independent experts. This initiative is expected to contribute to the growth and development of the Indian maritime sector, and enhance its global standing.
