Karnataka is set to launch a passenger ferry service to connect the state with the Lakshadweep Islands, aiming to provide tourists with a convenient sea route alternative to the traditional journey through Kochi. Previously, the islands were accessible via a passenger ship from the old port of Mangalore to Kadmat Island, but this service was discontinued, forcing travelers to go through Kochi. To address this issue, Karnataka is now planning to establish a dedicated jetty for the islands at the old port of Mangalore, as well as cargo and cruise terminal facilities. The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has confirmed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Lakshadweep administration and the Karnataka Maritime Board for this project.
The initiative seeks to improve travel options for tourists and enhance connectivity with the Lakshadweep Islands, which previously relied on the now-discontinued passenger ship service from Mangalore. By establishing a passenger ferry service and other dedicated facilities, Karnataka aims to provide a convenient and accessible sea route to the islands. The memorandum of understanding between the Lakshadweep administration and the Karnataka Maritime Board confirms the commitment to this project and is a significant step towards realizing this goal.
