In a significant advancement for maritime decarbonization, Anew Climate and Seaspan Energy have completed their inaugural ship-to-ship loading of renewable liquefied natural gas (Bio-LNG) at the Port of Long Beach, California. This operation represents a critical step in transitioning to lower-carbon marine fuels on the North American West Coast.
The successful bunkering of a commercial container vessel follows a strategic agreement announced last month to deliver Bio-LNG at scale. The renewable natural gas (RNG) used for the Bio-LNG was sourced from a Morrow Energy facility, which boasts a low certified carbon intensity of 7.74 grams of CO2e per megajoule under the ISCC framework.
This loading operation acts as a vital proof-of-concept for the scalable use of Bio-LNG in commercial shipping, highlighting its potential to decarbonize maritime transport.
This achievement builds on Anew Climate’s previous milestones, including the first Bio-LNG fueling of a marine vessel in the U.S. in 2021 and the launch of a carbon-neutral platform supply vessel in 2022.
