As many as 285 gold coins, weighing around 1,680 grams and valued at Rs 80 lakh, were reported stolen from a shipping crewing company in Powai. The coins, which were intended to honor employees upon their retirement, went missing from the office of Northern Marine management India Private Limited on August 9. The company, which is part of the Northern Marine group from Glasgow, provides manpower to shipping companies worldwide.
According to the police complaint filed by the company, some client firms give gold coins to employees as a retirement benefit after 5-20 years of service. A team of 12 personnel from the complainant company is responsible for managing these client firms. The missing gold coins were noticed by a team member who then informed the director and general manager, Rahul Dudhade, about the theft.
Since there was no sign of forced entry, the possibility of an outsider’s involvement was ruled out. The top management questioned the five senior executives who had access to the safe where the coins were kept. It was discovered that the safe had been last opened on July 12 by two employees, with one of them being absent since July 22 due to health reasons. An unknown person has been named in the police complaint, and an investigation is currently ongoing.
