The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) has introduced the Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP) with the goal of making the tugboat fleets at 12 state-owned ports green by 2047. The program consists of five phases with specific targets for introducing eco-friendly tugboats and alternative/green fuels. MoPSW aims to encourage the adoption of environmentally friendly shipbuilding in India and meet global efforts towards carbon neutrality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Under the GTTP, the five-phase timeline starts with the acquisition of battery-electric powered tugboats by 2027 and gradually increases the percentage of green tugboats at each stage. The ministry will provide financial support for the construction of environmentally friendly tugboats.
While the initiative is praised for promoting green shipbuilding, some tug operators are concerned about the impact on their business. Tugs that don’t comply with the GTTP will be required to market their tugs outside of India, but the higher cost of Indian-built tugs presents challenges. Despite these concerns, the MoPSW is committed to reducing emissions in the maritime sector and promoting the use of renewable energy in port operations.
To meet the targets of the GTTP, ports must comply with the standardized designs and specifications set by the ministry. The effort will contribute to reducing emissions and transitioning to environmentally friendly fuel and energy sources in the maritime industry.
