Greek authorities are investigating a collision between a cargo ship and a containership in the Ionian Sea on the western side of Greece. The incident caused a fire to break out aboard the Malta-registered feeder ship Libertas H, although there was only minor damage to the vessels. The collision occurred in a busy sea lane, approximately four miles from the island of Kefalonia, with a “fresh breeze” blowing at the time. The Libertas H, managed by Reederei Hinsch, was sailing from Greece to Albania with a crew of 11, while the other vessel involved, the Sea Leader, was sailing from Italy to Turkey with a crew of 12.

The chief of the local fire department reported that there was a small fire aboard the Libertas H, but the crew managed to extinguish it. The vessels were ordered to sail to the port of Argostoli on Kefalonia for inspections and interviews with the captains to determine the cause of the collision and the fire. Images show a small chop on the waters, indicating the weather conditions at the time of the incident. The investigation will focus on understanding what caused the fire and the circumstances surrounding the collision.
