Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries has developed an engine automation system for large merchant ships that brings the industry closer to the era of unmanned ships. The system, developed by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, consists of an Integrated Condition Diagnosis Solution (HiCBM) and an Integrated Safety Control Solution (HiCAMS). HiCBM uses artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor and manage core ship equipment in real-time, while HiCAMS uses AI to detect and analyze safety-related events using onboard CCTV. The systems can be applied to both newbuilds and existing ships. The safety and reliability of the systems were verified by the American Bureau of Shipping during a trial period last year. Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries stated that the advent of autonomous ships based on AI and digital technology is inevitable.

According to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Executive Director Kwon Byeong-hun, the commercialization of this engine automation solution is a significant step towards the era of unmanned ships. With the ability to diagnose engine equipment condition and recognize emergencies, such as fires, in real-time, the system reduces the need for human intervention on board. This development aligns with the industry’s increasing focus on autonomous technology and digitalization.
