The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has outlined its objectives and priorities for the next four years, focusing on safer, more secure, and environmentally friendly shipping. IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez highlighted four strategic priorities, including regulating international shipping, supporting Member States, enhancing public awareness, and managing relations with stakeholders. He also addressed challenges such as attacks on international ships in the Red Sea and the impact on trade volume through the Suez Canal.
Dominguez emphasized the resilience of shipping in the face of global challenges and provided an update on IMO efforts to decarbonize shipping by or around 2050. The organization has established a timeframe for talks and measures to reduce emissions over the medium term, including a global marine fuel standard and a pricing system. Dominguez also expressed a focus on making the IMO a more diverse, inclusive, and transparent institution.
In addition, the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) submitted a detailed proposal to IMO for a Zero Emission Shipping Fund (ZESF). The IMO’s efforts and priorities aim to ensure the safety, security, and sustainability of international shipping in the coming years.
