IMO member states have come together to denounce the ongoing attacks on ships and sailors in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, calling for an immediate end to these illegal and unjustified actions. The attacks pose a direct threat to freedom of navigation in a critical waterway and disrupt global trade. The resolution was prompted by the hijacking of the MV Galaxy Leader by the Houthis in November 2023, with around 50 attacks at sea following, resulting in deaths and hostages.
The committee urged for the release of the 25 crew members of the Galaxy Leader and emphasized the need for peaceful dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the crisis. Member states were reminded of their obligation under the UN arms embargo to prevent the supply of weapons to the Houthis. The IMO Secretary-General condemned the attacks and called for assistance to affected seafarers and a solution to the escalating crisis.
Ship operators and vessels were advised to consider the potential for further attacks in the region when making transit plans. The Maritime Safety Committee met in May to address the situation and will continue to monitor and engage with stakeholders to ensure the safety of maritime operations in the area. The resolution underscores the importance of maintaining the free navigation of essential goods by protecting seafarers from geopolitical tensions.
