India Ports Global Ltd (IPGL) is exploring options to purchase cranes and container-handling equipment for Iran’s Chabahar port. The Indian-funded port has faced a six-year delay in starting full-fledged operations due to a lack of equipment. IPGL canceled tenders for equipment purchase in September last year after no suppliers submitted price offers, despite multiple deadline extensions. As a result, IPGL is now in direct discussions with suppliers based in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, or Sharjah to expedite the equipment purchase. These suppliers would acquire the equipment and deliver it to their respective ports, from where it will be taken to Chabahar Port.

Indian officials have recently held talks with officials at Abu Dhabi Port, Dubai Port, and Sharjah Port to form purchase contracts directly with vendors. India would reimburse the costs in dollars. The equipment procurement has been challenging due to sanctions imposed by the West on Iran over its nuclear program. Suppliers have been reluctant to bid on contracts in previous attempts since 2017. IPGL remains confident that their new plan will succeed, as they explore various options.
