Sanjeev Sanyal, a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, emphasized the need for India to transform its approach to ships and shipping infrastructure to play a more significant role in maritime governance. Speaking at the curtain raiser event ‘Sagarmanthan: The Great Oceans Dialogue,’ organized by the Observer Research Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW), Sanyal highlighted the importance of investing in maritime resources and capabilities.
At the event, Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal stressed the vital connection between India’s security, prosperity, and maritime interests. The upcoming Sagarmanthan Dialogue, scheduled for November 18-19, 2024, will focus on critical topics such as the blue economy, maritime logistics, ports, shipping, waterways, critical minerals, diversified supply chains, global maritime economy, and training and labour standards. This dialogue aims to foster partnerships, enhance India’s global interactions, and promote future-oriented ocean governance.
Samir Saran, President of Observer Research Foundation, underlined the expanding maritime ambitions of India and the growing need for a comprehensive ocean dialogue. Other speakers at the event, including Amitabh Kant, G20 Sherpa for India, and Malini V Shankar, Vice Chancellor of the Indian Maritime University, emphasized the significance of the Sagarmanthan Dialogue in shaping India’s future in the maritime domain. The dialogue is expected to attract various stakeholders, including leaders, policymakers, scholars, industry representatives, and civil society, to generate innovative ideas and promote a new accord on ocean governance.
