Ports, Shipping and Waterways secretary T K Ramachandran stated that the recent problems in the Red Sea will not impact India’s maritime trade with the rest of the world. The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, a vital shipping route connecting the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean, has experienced increased tensions due to attacks by Yemen-based Houthi militants.
Despite the escalating situation in the Red Sea, Ramachandran assured that it will have “no impact” on India’s maritime trade. The strait is crucial for 30% of global container traffic and has seen various incidents, including attacks and military manoeuvres by regional and global powers.
The Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, also known as the “Gate of Tears,” is an essential trade route that connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean via the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, separating Africa from the Arabian Peninsula. Despite the recent tensions, India’s maritime trade with the rest of the world is expected to remain unaffected.
