CMA CGM, along with A.P. Moller–Maersk and MSC, is expanding its presence in India, aligning with the country’s vision to establish itself as a global maritime hub. During a recent visit to France, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) with CMA CGM’s CEO, Rodolphe Saadé. The IMEC aims to enhance connectivity and trade between Europe and India, incorporating sea, land, and subsea cable infrastructure. CMA CGM plans to leverage its logistics network to support dry ports along the IMEC rail route.
MSC CEO Soren Toft recently met with India’s Union Minister of Commerce to explore investments in inland container terminals and eco-friendly shipbuilding. Meanwhile, Maersk signed a memorandum of understanding with Cochin Shipyard Limited to collaborate on ship maintenance and repair, marking the beginning of a long-term partnership.
The Indian government is boosting its maritime sector by launching a ₹250 billion ($2.9 billion) fund to support domestic shipbuilding and repair industries. Financing will enhance ship acquisitions, training, and infrastructure, aiming to increase Indian-flagged vessels to 20% by 2047. Despite its minimal global market share, India’s shipbuilding sector shows promise, with projections indicating a significant growth opportunity in the coming years.
