The Minister of Science and Technology stated that India ranks fourth in the world in seaweed production. The World Seaweed Science Conference 2024 was held in Chennai, where over 100 delegates from various countries gathered. A research paper with 400 pages focusing on seaweed cultivation and trade was presented during the conference.
Minister Murugan highlighted the importance of the Indian coastline, which spans 8,000 kilometers and has seen an investment of 38,500 crore rupees in the seaweed sector since 2014. Efforts are being made to protect the marine ecosystem and promote seaweed farming in places like Rameswaram.
The advancements in digital technology have boosted the fishing industry, leading to an increase in production and revenue. The sector is now worth one lakh crore rupees, with a focus on enhancing the infrastructure and techniques for sustainable fishing practices.
