The Izmail Seafarers’ Centre, a facility providing humanitarian support to seafarers and their families displaced by war in Ukraine, has been targeted by a drone attack, according to the ITF Seafarers Trust. The centre, which had been funded by the Trust, was housing families who had been made homeless by bombing in other parts of Odesa. Although the building suffered significant damage, no casualties were reported as the residents and staff had sought shelter in the basement.

Oleg Grigoryuk, Chairman of the Marine Transport Workers’ Trade Union of Ukraine, expressed shock at the senseless destruction, highlighting the additional devastation inflicted upon maritime cities in Ukraine. David Heindel, Chair of the ITF Seafarers’ Trust, conveyed his sympathy to the affected families and staff, emphasizing that seafarers’ families and union staff should not have to endure such terror. Katie Higginbottom, Head of the ITF Seafarers’ Trust, acknowledged the relief that there were no casualties but recognized the psychological stress inflicted by this vicious act. The Trust has pledged to offer support to Ukrainian colleagues and assist in repairing the physical damage to the centre.

The drone attack serves as a reminder of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the impact it has on innocent civilians and vital humanitarian facilities. It also highlights the inherent dangers faced by seafarers and their families, who are already dealing with the challenges of a demanding profession. The ITF Seafarers Trust continues to advocate for the well-being and safety of seafarers and their families, offering support and assistance in times of crisis. Maintaining the security and stability of seafarers’ centres becomes crucial not only for the individuals sheltering there but also for the wider maritime community.
