Japanese maritime companies have completed the initial phases of a collaborative project aimed at developing a secure data-sharing framework between shipyards and shipowners to enhance the use of digital twins in a ship’s lifecycle. The project involves major players such as NAPA, NYK Group, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Marubeni Corporation, Imabari Shipbuilding, Japan Marine United Corporation, Usuki Shipyard, and ClassNK. The goal is to utilize a vessel’s unique design data to improve efficiency and safety at sea through the sharing of operational data.

This project has identified over 30 potential use cases where data and 3D models can be shared to create a vessel-specific digital twin, benefiting operational efficiency and safety. The next phase will focus on developing a platform that allows secure sharing of 3D models from the design stage, along with exploring new business models for commercial agreements. By breaking data silos and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, the project aims to revolutionize the maritime sector by 2025.

The partnership also seeks to leverage operational data for valuable insights on ship performance, enabling improvements in future ship designs. NAPA’s collaboration with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will further accelerate the digital transformation of the shipbuilding industry, creating intelligent solutions to support the entire shipbuilding process and move towards a “digital shipyard” vision. Through such initiatives, the industry aims to optimize operations, maintenance, and the adoption of innovative technologies in shipping.
