The JN Port Authority (JNPA) has accepted a new initiative from M/s Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal (NSDT) to boost coastal shipping. The ship arrived at the shallow water berth on 17 August 2023, and Shri Unmesh Sharad Wagh, Vice Chairman of JNPA, accepted the ship along with department heads. The JNPA has created a favorable environment for private sector participation through well-structured public-private partnerships (PPPs), and in May 2023, a 30-year concession agreement was signed with NSDT to develop and operate both the Shallow Water Berth (SWB) and the Coastal Berth (CB). This initiative will facilitate the transportation of steel products from land to sea, reducing congestion and CO2 emissions by removing approximately 2,000 trucks from city streets. Regular shipments of steel from the east coast and cement from Gujarat are expected to arrive at SWB and CB.
Sri. Sanjay Sethi, Chairman of the JNPA, sees this as a fresh start for coastal transportation of domestic cargo from eastern ports in India to western ports via the sea route. The initiative will support the development of the industry in Maharashtra and Gujarat. The aim is to encourage a modal shift in transportation and promote the growth of coastal shipping, utilizing the well-developed infrastructure in the port. This initiative is part of JNPA’s efforts to expand and attract private sector investment through PPPs.
