Two mechanical sails have been added to Jumbo’s heavy lift vessel, the Jumbo Jubilee, as part of their wind-assisted ship propulsion (WASP) solution. This innovative technology aims to improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. Jumbo Maritime CEO Daan Kornneef emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable heavy-lift shipping through energy-saving and decarbonization initiatives across their fleet. The installation of these sails marks a significant step towards achieving a greener maritime industry.

Jumbo’s approach involves implementing various fuel-saving solutions on a single vessel to measure each technology’s impact on overall efficiency. Previous enhancements to the Jumbo Jubilee include an efficiency-boosting propeller coating, an AI-powered anti-fouling monitoring system, and an eco-control system. The addition of two Econowind ventofoils will evaluate the effectiveness of WASP on the vessel’s performance. Technical manager Andres Cassanova noted that while the sails are not yet optimized for their vessel type, they will provide valuable insights for potential fuel savings and further environmental improvements.

The compact design of the sails makes them ideal for installation on a heavy lift vessel where space is crucial for carrying project cargoes. The sails are mounted on a customized frame engineered in-house, allowing for flexibility in movement or transfer to another vessel if needed. In addition to the ventofoils, the Jumbo Jubilee has undergone other eco-friendly upgrades such as an anti-fouling propeller coating and an AI-powered hull coating monitoring system. An eco-control system has also been installed to optimize fuel consumption and emissions. These technologies, combined with collaboration between onboard and onshore teams, are expected to lead to significant fuel savings and environmental benefits for Jumbo.
