A crew member died and several others were injured in a fire that broke out on the K Line operated pure car and truck carrier Fremantle Highway off the Dutch coast. The 23 crew members were evacuated by the Dutch coast guard from the burning vessel, which was carrying 2,857 cars, including 25 electric vehicles, en route from Bremerhaven to Singapore.
The fire started around 2145 hrs UTC, and despite the crew’s efforts, it could not be controlled. The crew was evacuated with the assistance of the Netherlands Coastguard and the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution. Unfortunately, one crew member passed away, and efforts are being made to support their next of kin. The focus is now on safety, salvage, and firefighting operations.
The Fremantle Highway is currently located north of Ameland, with a fire still present on board. Injured crew members have been taken for medical attention. The vessel is leased by K-Line from Shoei Kisen Kaisha and managed by Wallem Shipmanagement. The ship is insured by the Japan Shipowners Mutual P&I Association and is one of eight vessels registered to Shoei-controlled Luster Maritime.
