Kongsberg Maritime has recently introduced a groundbreaking vessel design concept known as the ‘Super-Efficient Bulker.’ Developed in collaboration with Deltamarin, this innovative design offers fuel cost savings ranging from 40-50%, depending on the vessel’s operational profile. The design is based on a Kamsarmax bulker of 82,000 DWT, a commonly used vessel size worldwide, making it an ideal candidate for this study due to restrictions with the availability of low-carbon fuels.
This new vessel concept incorporates a unique combination of three tiltable rotor sails and two suction wing sails to maximize wind power utilization, adapting to various wind conditions for optimal performance. Additionally, Kongsberg Maritime has devised a hull form that utilizes an air lubrication system to minimize resistance, with a patent application in place to implement this concept. The vessel’s design also features an inclined hull with vertically turned bilge keels to trap bubbles and reduce drag.
Emphasizing the benefits of slow steaming, the ‘Super-Efficient Bulker’ operates at a reduced speed to achieve significant savings in fuel, emissions, and maintenance costs. Equipped with a hybrid shaft generator with frequency control, the vessel can efficiently manage the increased electric load from wind propulsion devices and air lubrication compressors. With an Intelligent Energy Management System (iEMS) and route optimization software, the vessel ensures optimal energy utilization for sustainable and cost-effective operations.
