Kongsberg Maritime is set to conduct a significant upgrade on Solstad’s Normand Sentinel, a subsea construction vessel that has been in service for 10 years. The upgrade will involve the installation of Kongsberg Maritime’s RD-AZ2600 electric rim-drive azimuth thrusters, which are expected to result in energy savings of up to 16% during transit operations and up to 40% in dynamic positioning mode.

The 143-metre-long Normand Sentinel is scheduled to receive the upgrade during its next dry dock inspection, with the new RD-AZ2600 replacing the current AZP 120 CP mechanical thrusters. This move is aimed at extending the vessel’s service life and reducing fuel consumption, aligning with Solstad’s commitment to emission reduction. The upgrade is also expected to enhance the vessel’s operability and capacity while reducing maintenance requirements.

By investing in this upgrade for their decade-old vessel, Solstad demonstrates a commitment to providing energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly maritime solutions. The new rim-drive thrusters are anticipated to not only deliver energy savings but also reduce maintenance costs and total ownership expenses. The retrofitting process is expected to be seamless, requiring minimal modifications to the hull and integrating smoothly with the existing steering gear.
