Videos circulating on social media and in Greek news outlets depict a close call between a luxury charter yacht and a tourist boat, prompting an official investigation into the incident. Reports suggest that the two vessels narrowly avoided a collision, with the tourist boat carrying 480 passengers on a day trip.
Greek authorities analyzing the footage have determined that the tourist vessel, Nidri Star 1, had the right of way, while the yacht failed to adhere to navigation rules. Despite the tourist boat’s captain taking evasive action at the last moment, the yacht managed to pass by closely, causing alarm among passengers who captured the event on video.
The Nidri Star 1, a vessel capable of accommodating up to 500 passengers, operates day cruises in the Ionian Sea, making stops at popular destinations such as Fiscardo and Ithaca. In contrast, the luxury yacht involved in the incident, identified as the Bleu de Nimes, caters to a much smaller group of 28 passengers and crew, boasting a significant value of $62 million. The incident has raised speculation about potential alcohol involvement, as the yacht appeared to continue on its course despite the close call. Authorities are investigating the matter, highlighting concerns about maritime safety and infrastructure in the region.
