Maersk recently celebrated the naming of the third vessel in its fleet of 18 large dual-fuel methanol containerships, marking a significant milestone in the company’s ongoing rollout of these revolutionary ships. The naming of the fourth ship is expected to follow shortly, as Maersk lays out plans for fleet modernization with a focus on transitioning to new, more environmentally friendly vessels.
The third vessel, named Antonia Maersk, was christened at a ceremony in Aarhus, Denmark, by Kirsten Andersen, the spouse of Vestas CEO Henrik Andersen. The vessel is part of a series of 18 large methanol-enabled newbuilds scheduled for delivery between 2024 and 2025, with each ship capable of sailing on green methanol.
CEO Vincent Clerc emphasized Maersk’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and the challenges of operating on green fuels due to higher costs and limited availability. Maersk is exploring a mix of methanol and liquified gas dual-fuel propulsion systems to meet its decarbonization goals, with plans to secure offtake agreements for liquified bio-methane for greenhouse gas emissions reductions in the near future.
