Maersk is responding to the increased demand for shipping via the Cape of Good Hope by expanding its fleet. The company has chartered Neo-Panamax ships, the 15,000 TEU ONE Focus and the 13,100 TEU Wan Hai A12, from ONE and Wan Hai. These vessels have been added to the Far East-US West Coast service TP6, which is operated jointly with Maersk’s partner, Mediterranean Shipping Company.

The Wan Hai A12, which was originally intended for Wan Hai’s transpacific or Far East-South America services, is a newly built vessel by Samsung Heavy Industries. Wan Hai officials have stated that they will deploy their vessels according to the latest service plan and may make adjustments to their business plan by subletting or chartering the vessel. This marks a significant change in strategy for Maersk, which had previously not aggressively expanded its fleet, but is now responding to the increasing demand for shipping services.
