Maersk and Kenya Ports Authority have partnered to launch a maritime training program aimed at developing the local maritime sector and supporting the blue economy. The program will provide fully funded, 12-month sea-time training opportunities aboard Maersk vessels for 10 Kenyan cadets. This initiative addresses the challenge of practical sea-time experience for graduates and aims to build capacity within the local seafaring community.
At the launch event, attended by key stakeholders such as the Mombasa Country Governor, representatives from the Royal Danish Embassy, Bandari Maritime Academy, Shippers Council of Eastern Africa, and Kenya Ships Agents Association, Maersk Kenya CFO Oliver Bunting emphasized the company’s commitment to creating lasting value beyond commercial operations. The program is designed to equip cadets with the essential skills needed to pursue a professional career as seafarers, reflecting Kenya’s maritime ambitions.
Kenya Ports Authority welcomed the training opportunity, acknowledging the importance of building capacity among local seafarers. Managing director Captain William Ruto highlighted the challenges faced by seafarers in gaining critical sea-time training due to limited opportunities aboard local vessels. The selected cadets will undergo rigorous training that meets international standards, positioning them for employment opportunities within Maersk and the broader maritime industry. This initiative underscores Maersk’s long-term commitment to Kenya and its focus on creating sustainable value through strategic partnerships.
