The development of infrastructure and expansion of capacity for large ports is an ongoing process, involving the construction of new berths and terminals, mechanization of existing ones, investment dredging to attract larger vessels, and the development of road and rail connections. As a result, the cargo handling capacity of the country’s major ports has increased to 1617.39 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by March 2023.

Over the last three years, there has been a steady increase in cargo handling capacity at various ports. For example, at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Harbor, the capacity has increased from 90.77 MTPA in 2020-21 to 92.77 MTPA in 2022-23. Similarly, at Paradip port, the capacity has increased from 259 MTPA in 2020-21 to 289.75 MTPA in 2022-23. This trend is consistent across several major ports, with a total increase in cargo handling capacity from 1560.61 MTPA in 2020-21 to 1617.39 MTPA in 2022-23.

The expansion of capacity at these major ports is essential for facilitating the handling of increasing cargo volumes and accommodating larger vessels. This indicates a positive trend in the development of India’s port infrastructure and its ability to meet the growing demands of global trade.
