Officials from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency provided an update on Monday regarding the collision of two tankers on Friday. They stated that their involvement in the incident is winding down, with the focus now shifting to the investigation of the accident. All crew members from both tankers have been confirmed safe, and efforts are being made to secure the vessels.
The Chinese VLCC, Ceres 1, has been towed to a safe area approximately 20 nautical miles east of Tanjung Sedili in Malaysia. The captain of the Ceres 1 reported that the 26 crew members onboard are safe. Meanwhile, 14 crew members from the Ceres 1 and all 22 crew members from the Hafnia Nile are currently being accommodated in Singapore following the evacuation during the fire.
The Hafnia Nile will also be towed to a similar location for further investigation. The vessel, which was carrying a cargo of naphtha to Japan, is now secured with tugs. Environmental efforts will be managed by Malaysia’s Department of the Environment, as a small amount of oil was reported in the area around the collision. The circumstances leading to the incident remain a mystery, as officials have not disclosed any additional details at this time.
