On April 25, 2025, a collision occurred between a container vessel, KMTC Surabaya, and a bulk carrier, Glengyle, on the Saigon–Vung Tau waterway in Vietnam, causing significant damage and an oil spill into the Long Tau River. The incident took place shortly before 11 PM local time, with the KMTC Surabaya, a Panama-flagged ship, en route to Hong Kong, while the Glengyle, flagged in Hong Kong, was heading to Ho Chi Minh Port.
The KMTC Surabaya sustained damage to its bow, whereas the Glengyle suffered a breach at the stern. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and shipping operations in the area remained unaffected. In response to the spill, the Vietnam Maritime and Waterway Administration has mobilized tugboats and specialized equipment to manage the situation.
Both vessels are owned by notable shipping companies, with the KMTC Surabaya owned by Japan’s Nissen Kaiun and the Glengyle managed by Uni Ships & Management. Authorities are actively addressing the environmental impact of the oil spill while ensuring safety in the affected waterways.
