MAN Cryo, a part of MAN Energy Solutions, has been chosen by Torghatten Nord A/S, a Norwegian ferry company, to collaborate on a project involving the design and engineering of two hydrogen-powered RoPax ferries. This initiative aligns with a Norwegian government mandate for large vessels on the challenging mainland-Lofoten Islands route to transition to emission-free operations. The project will include the design of bunkering systems, hydrogen piping, and vent masts for the vessels, with MAN Cryo serving as the system integrator for the hydrogen process plant and coordinating with other key suppliers.
Torghatten Nord A/S, having secured the ‘Bodø – Værøy – Røst – Moskenes’ ferry tender in northern Norway, will introduce two new vessels designed by The Norwegian Ship Design Company. These vessels, running on green, compressed hydrogen, are scheduled for delivery in 2026 after being outfitted in Norway. Eirik Olsen of Torghatten Nord AS expressed satisfaction with the collaboration with MAN Cryo, expanding their partnership from LNG to hydrogen, while Gjermund Johannessen of The Norwegian Ship Design Company commended MAN Cryo’s forward-thinking approach and looks forward to their continued collaboration.
Henrik Malm, Managing Director of MAN Energy Solutions Sweden, emphasized the company’s commitment to developing future-fuel systems for the maritime industry. The collaboration with MAN Cryo showcases their expertise in sustainable marine operations and their contribution to a cleaner, greener maritime future. With a focus on advanced engineering and seamless integration capabilities, MAN Cryo’s work on the hydrogen ferry project for Torghatten Nord is a significant step towards achieving zero-emission ferry transportation.
