The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) has released its Annual Overview of accidents and incidents at sea, showing a significant decrease in marine casualties in 2022. The report collected data from the EU marine casualty database known as EMCIP and focused on accidents involving EU Member State-flagged ships. Compared to 2021, there was a decrease of 182 marine casualties and incidents and a decrease of 84 compared to 2020.

Despite an increase in traffic in 2022, resulting from the resumption of cruise and ferry operations, the number of reported victims and incidents was 5.1% below the annual average and pre-pandemic levels. The report also highlighted positive developments in accident indicators, with a decrease in the total number of ships involved in accidents, particularly cargo ships and fishing vessels. The number of very serious maritime accidents also significantly decreased in 2022.

The report noted improvements in shipping incidents, with a decrease in pollutant emissions since 2019, particularly in air pollution and cargo pollution. Geographically, most accidents and incidents occurred in EU inland waters, followed by the territorial sea and open sea, with the North Atlantic and Mediterranean being the most affected areas. The number of security investigations and deaths from maritime accidents also decreased.

The report emphasized the role of the human element in accidents, with human actions and behavior contributing to most incidents. Safety recommendations, especially relating to ship-related procedures, were mentioned as a significant part of accident prevention. Overall, the decline in marine casualties reported in 2022 is seen as a positive outcome, indicating improved safety measures and a better understanding of risk factors.
