The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced the winners of the IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea 2024, which recognizes outstanding acts of heroism in the shipping industry. This year, the award was given to two groups: the captain and crew of the oil tanker Marlin Luanda, who extinguished a fire caused by an anti-ship missile attack, and the captain and crew of the tug Pemex locations, who rescued six shipwrecked individuals during a hurricane.
Captain Avhilash Rawat and the crew of the Marlin Luanda, nominated by the Marshall Islands, displayed extraordinary courage and skill in fighting the fire on their vessel after it was hit by a missile in the Gulf of Aden. Despite the dangerous conditions, they managed to contain the fire and ensure the safety of the crew until help arrived. Captain Jorge Fernando Galaviz Fuentes and the crew of the tug Pemex locations, nominated by Mexico, also demonstrated remarkable bravery in rescuing six people during Hurricane Otis.
In addition to the main award winners, two individuals will receive certificates of recognition and 15 others will receive letters of recognition for their brave actions. The nominations were carefully reviewed by a judging panel and approved by the IMO Council. The winners will be honored at an awards ceremony during the 109th session of the Maritime Safety Committee at IMO Headquarters in London on December 2, 2024.
