Yemen’s Houthi militias targeted a Liberian-flagged container ship, the MV Groton, with two rockets in the Gulf of Aden, as part of their ongoing operations against commercial shipping. The attack, reported by Yemeni military spokesman Yahya Saree, marked the second assault on the vessel since August 3. Fortunately, the crew remained unharmed, and there was no mention of any damage to the ship.
The Houthi militants have been conducting a nine-month drone and missile campaign in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, resulting in the sinking of two ships. They claim these actions are in solidarity with Palestinians amid the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, hinting at further attacks unless a ceasefire is established. In a recent incident, the Houthis targeted the Greek-flagged oil tanker Sounion, which was transporting approximately 1 million barrels of oil.
The ongoing assaults on commercial vessels by the Houthi militants have raised concerns among maritime trade activities in the region, prompting warnings from organizations like the UK Maritime Trade Operations. The situation reflects a pressing need for diplomatic resolutions to prevent further escalation and safeguard maritime security in the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea.
