Mauritius Prime Minister Emphasizes International Support for Maritime Security and Sustainable Growth

Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth emphasized the need for the enduring and committed support of the international community to improve maritime security. He spoke at the Third Ministerial Conference on Maritime Security and Safety in the Western Indian Ocean, addressing concerns over challenges such as contested boundaries, depletion of natural resources, and armed attacks by pirates and criminals. Jugnauth highlighted the need for a sustainable maritime sector free from threats and tension, and emphasized the merits of growing the blue economy in a sustainable, inclusive, and people-centered manner.

Mauritius Foreign Minister Gobin emphasized that Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are stewards and custodians of vast ocean areas and have a critical interest in protecting the health of the oceans. The Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) stressed the need for cooperation in tackling maritime threats, while the Director General for the UN Office of Nairobi highlighted the aim of the conference to ensure the sustainability and peaceful use of the oceans and safeguard the maritime domain from traditional and evolving threats. The conference is being organized by the Mauritius Foreign Ministry, Regional Integration, and International Trade in collaboration with the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC).
