Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) has commenced the production of the first Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) for the Indian Coast Guard, which is part of a larger project involving the construction of 14 vessels. Simultaneously, the company has initiated plate cutting for the second vessel of the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs). The plate cutting ceremony for the first FPV signifies the start of constructing this high-speed fleet, with Biju George, Director of Shipbuilding at MDL, presiding over the event in the presence of senior Indian Coast Guard officials.

Under a contract valued at ₹1,070.47 crore, MDL is tasked with the design, construction, and supply of 14 FPVs for the Indian Coast Guard. These vessels will be equipped with advanced waterjet propulsion systems, capable of speeds exceeding 33 knots, and will be categorized into dual classes (ABS and IRS). Primarily designed for coastal patrol and fisheries protection, the FPVs will also feature a high-speed boat for search and rescue operations in shallow waters, along with functionalities for wartime duties such as convoy escort, medical evacuation, and logistical support.

In addition to the FPV project, MDL has secured a contract for six NGOPVs with the Indian Coast Guard, amounting to ₹1,614.89 crore. The cutting of slabs for the second NGOPV represents a significant milestone following the initial slab cutting on May 31st. These vessels, furnished with two controllable pitch propellers and 9,000 kW engines, are designed to achieve speeds exceeding 23 knots and will fall under the dual class category (ABS & IRS). The NGOPVs are tailored for coastal and offshore patrols, fishery protection, anti-piracy missions, search and rescue operations, and maritime surveillance, pivotal for monitoring India’s maritime zones and Maritime Lines of Communication (SLOCs).

Scheduled for delivery in March 2026, the first FPV and the first and second NGOPVs are set for completion by July 2027 and December 2027, respectively. These undertakings underscore MDL’s commitment to enhancing the operational capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard, showcasing the significant progress in strengthening maritime security in the region.
